Expertise & Background
Dr. Mackowiak (Muh-KO-vee-ack) provides individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for adults. He earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri–Columbia, a program that balances multicultural counseling approaches with a strong foundation in evidence-based practice. Chris is particularly interested in the psychology of men, masculinity, and barriers to help-seeking for a variety of health issues. Chris completed APA Internship and Post-Doctoral Residency at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital. As a mid-career psychologist, he has developed personally and professionally in a few ways: (a) as a well-rounded clinician with a solid grasp on the clinical process of assessment-conceptualization-treatment planning-service delivery; (b) as an administrator and consultant, helping to develop creative strategies to reach populations that under-utilize traditional services through community-based interventions; and (c) as a divorced dad of two boys, having emerged on the other side stronger than he was before.

Treatment Approach
Dr. Mackowiak deeply values informed consent throughout the clinical process. He understands that people establish trust in different ways with different people and that promising confidentiality doesn’t automatically mean it’s safe to disclose. Chris does his best work when clients engage in a collaborative relationship that explores all of the options available to create change (e.g., bereavement work can look like individual counseling with a competent therapist, lighting candles and praying with a caring priest/pastor/rabbi, or being inked by a tattoo artist). The path to change isn’t always straightforward but is often hastened by connection to others. Chris enjoys working with people who present with a broad range of concerns including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, interpersonal trauma, relationship health and attachment concerns, anger management, adjustment to life transitions, and men’s issues. He has a special soft spot for grizzled veterans with moral injury.
